The receptivity of the leading edge to external disturbances is discussed with special attention paid to the role of freestream sound Only a brief review of the role of freestream turbulence and vorticity is given because progress has been slow in these areas. The progress made in theoretical modeling, direct numerical simulations, and experimental measurements is discussed. It is shown that some aspects of the theory have been validated and that progress toward understanding how freestream disturbances provide the initial conditions for unstable waves has been achieved.
