  • 1996, N.D. Finkelstein et al. We present a continuously tunable, spectrally transform limited linewidth, high power ultraviolet laser source and accompanying narrow band filter for non-intrusive diagnostic applications. By frequency tripling the output of an injection seeded Titanium: Sapphire laser system we achieve narrow linewidth, tunable, ultraviolet light at 253.7 nm. An active feedback loop maintains precise control of the pulsed laser cavity length relative to the seed frequency on a shot by shot basis, insuring single mode output during rapid continuous spectral scans, during broad discontinuous frequency jumps (GHz), and in high acoustic noise environments such as wind tunnels. Coupled with an atomic mercury vapor absorption filter, this system is used to obtain Ultraviolet Filtered Rayleigh Scattering (UV FRS) images of a Mach 2 free jet.
