abstract
Feature-based automated process planning is considered as the linkage between design and manufacturing. Features are the information carriers between design and manufacturing. In this study, manufacturing features are extracted by comparing a finished part and a blank. The feature recognition is performed with the programs written in C and the CLIPS expert system. Process plans are generated based on the recognized feature information and production knowledge. A Removable Surface-based Concave Edge (RS-CE) Feature Extraction approach is introduced in this paper. A General Manufacturing Feature Information Scheme (GMF-IS) is also designed to maintain the information about the features, blank and the finished part. The entire system is integrated with the I-DEAS software (a MCAE product of SDRC).
