COMMERCIAL TECHNOLOGY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF PORTABLE ACTIVE DETECTION INSTRUMENTS Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • Instruments that have a real-time response and that are capable of providing dosimetric and spectroscopic information share many common electronic functions. Conceptually, these instruments differ little from those developed in the early 1950s. What has dramatically changed, however, is the electronic components and the techniques which can be used in the construction of these instruments, as well as the greatly reduced cost when using commercial components and techniques. Most of us are aware of the dramatic changes in computer performance, size, and cost but are unfamiliar with the revolutionary changes that are taking place in commercial electronic components and manufacturing technology that make this possible. Understanding these fundamental technological advancements is the first step in their adoption into a variety of sophisticated lightweight portable radiation dosemeters, as well as a variety of other radiation instrumentation.
