abstract
A numerical solution to the L.A. Richards equation for steady, three-dimensional combine unsaturated and saturated flow was developed using the Gauss-Seidel finite difference method with successive over-relaxation (GS-SOR). The convergence rate of the numerical solution was further increased by employing the multigrid method (MG3D). The solutions to three sample problems with and without the use of multigrids were obtained and compared: two-dimensional flow between two parallel ditches and two-and three-dimensional pond seepage. The multigrid method reduced the required CPU time by 71 to 82% for these three problems.
