abstract
Wastewater generated by rural/suburban residents can be a significant source of ground and surface water pollution. Failing septic systems can contribute pathogens, nutrients and organic matter to water resources. The primary goal of this research program was to evaluate and demonstrate the effectiveness of subsurface flow constructed wetland systems for onsite wastewater treatment and then reuse of the effluent for irrigation. Four subsurface flow constructed wetland systems were installed at individual and multi-family residences at Weslaco, Stephenville and D'Hanis, Texas. Preliminary results indicate that constructed wetland systems are effective and economical alternatives for onsite wastewater treatment and treated effluent is available for irrigation.
