abstract
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the difficulties associated with running pre-stimulation tests in the Devonian Shales and to present guidelines for the design and implementation of the pre-stimulation tests. We first discuss the background of four pre-stimulation drillstem tests run in the Devonian Shales which could not be analyzed by conventional methods. Then, we discuss a simulated test to help explain what we observed in the drillstem tests. Since conventional methods could not be employed to analyze the pre-stimulation tests, we applied our reservoir simulator to history match the field data. The resulting analysis is presented. Guidelines are presented for the design and implementation of a pre-stimulation pressure transient test for the Devonian Shales.
