abstract
The reactions of XF+ with Fe(CO) formally proceed through two routes, charge transfer and clustering. The charge transfer reaction channel yields Fe(CO)y+ species (y = 3-5). Clustering reactions yield X(CO)yFex+ species (x = 1-3, y = 2,3,5,6,9). We suggest that the product ions are formed along a reaction coordinate involving a common collision complex. The product distribution is governed by competitive charge transfer and geometric relaxation of the collision complex. The ratio of cluster formation to charge exchange is discussed in terms of the electronegativity of the halide. 1991.
