Exploration of the Ageing Phenomenon in Hong Kong and its Implications for Leisure Service Delivery Academic Article

abstract

• The study explores the ageing phenomenon in Hong Kong and draws some implications for leisure service delivery. Interviews were conducted with 25 elderly in the Tsuen Wan District in Hong Kong. Purposive sampling was used to select the sample. The interviews were semi-structured, based on an interview guide of open-ended questions. The results of the study suggest that some ageing models which have been developed in western countries are applicable in Hong Kong. Four implications for leisure service delivery in Hong Kong are derived: more research on ageing and leisure should be conducted; leisure education for both elderly and younger generations is needed to cultivate leisure interests; leisure participation can provide companionship for the elderly; and a visitor-oriented approach should be adopted in leisure service delivery. 2005 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
