abstract
This paper addresses a major issue in microtribology related to the head/disk interface (HDI) in magnetic storage. This is the issue of strong intermolecular (adhesive) forces that may be present at the interface with very smooth surfaces. More specifically, a model termed the sub-boundary lubrication (SBL) model is developed and applied to typical HDIs. It uses the Lennard-Jones attractive potential to characterize the intermolecular forces, and a statistical surface roughness model.
