Catalytic growth of single-crystalline V(2)O(5) nanowire arrays. Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The catalyzed vapor transport growth of vertical arrays of orthorhombic V2O5nanowires was described. The nanowires were fabricated on Si/SiO2substrates and an ultrathin Co film of 0.5-2.0 nm thickness was used to catalyze the growth of the nanowire arrays. Discrete islands of nanowire arrays are visible on the Si/SiO2substrate with each island spanning various square kilometers. The nanowires prepared by the vapor transport of V2O5using a 1.5-nm Co film are found to have average diamater of 8020nm. The results also show that the growth of nanowire arrays start at islands that re more catalytically active, yielding initial aligned arrays seen after 1 and 3 hr. The CoV2O6subsystem with howardevansite and lyonsite-type structures is observed to melt at approximately 640C at atmospheric pressure.
