In recent years, the classroom learning environment paradigm has expanded its use of research methods from primarily using traditional surveys and questionnaires to incorporating more mixed methodology. The use of mixed method studies allows researchers to gain a more comprehensive picture of what is actually occurring in the classroom. This chapter summarizes recent research that incorporated the mixed methods of survey research (i.e., student questionnaires) and systematic classroom observation (i.e., low- and high-inference measures) to investigate various aspects of classroom environments for educationally resilient (i.e., academically successful) and nonresilient (i.e., academically unsuccessful) students in urban elementary schools located in the USA. In addition, we focus on how survey and observational data from individual teachers classrooms can provide meaningful feedback to teachers that may help them improve their classroom instruction and learning environment. Finally, the chapter addresses some of the implications of our current mixed methods research on classroom learning environments for future research and teachers professional development.
