Large eddy simulation of turbulent flow in a tube bundle Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • In this investigation, large eddy simulation (LES) technique is used to investigate the flow patterns and turbulent buffeting forces within a square array of tubes. An eight-tube fine-mesh calculation with a pitch-to-diameter (P/D) ratio of 1.75 is used to simulate the experiment of Chen & Jendrzejczyk. The Smagorinsky model is utilized to represent the sub-grid scales. The computed flow field, which behaves with characteristics commonly observed in bundle flow, is presented with instantaneous velocity vectors and power spectrum plots for the lift and drag coefficients, which have been compared to the experimental data of Chen & Jendrzejczyk. Similar to the experiment, the LES lift spectrum exhibits a pronounced peak while the drag spectrum is relatively flat.
