abstract
Today's economics necessitates the continuous improvement of the thermal efficiency of heat exchangers in power plants. This invariably leads to higher flow rates and more flexible tubes in these heat exchangers. In this investigation Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has been successfully used to simulate turbulent flow by the numeric solution of the incompressible, isothermal, single phase Navier-Stokes equations. Smagorinsky's eddy viscosity model has been utilized to model the smaller eddies in the flow domain. Staggered and inlined array flow fields were considered and numerical simulations were performed in two-dimensional flows. Velocity vector fields were obtained, and switching effects were observed leading to realistic representation of the flow paths in the domain. Power spectral densities were used for comparison to experimental data with promising results.
