NUMERICAL-SIMULATION OF EPRI CREARE 1/5-SCALE MIXING TESTS Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • knowledge of fluid mixing is discussed regarding analysis of overcooling transients during small-break loss-of-coolant accidents in pressurized water reactors where relatively cold high-pressure water (HPI) is injected, and hence pressurized thermal shock is theoretically possible. In this study a numerical simulation of EPRI/CREARE one-fifth-scale fluid and thermal mixing test 51 is conducted using a new modified version of the three-dimensional COMMIX-1A code. In essence, this paper indicates that the three-dimensional code COMMIX-1A with the newly developed skew-upwind finite difference scheme predicts the thermal mixing processes observed in the EPRI/CREARE one-fifth-scale test facility with a minimum of numerical diffusion errors.
