Comparison of two different air quality models (CALPUFF vs. CMAQ) to assess the air quality impact for the operation of a thermoelectric power plant in Mexico Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • The performance of Eulerian chemical transport model known as Community Multiscale Air Quality Model (CMAQ) and a Lagrangian dispersion model CALPUFF was compared to evaluate the air quality impact due to SO 2 and NO 2 emissions from a thermoelectric power plant located at North of Mexico City Metropolitan Zone . CALPUFF model presented better performance for SO 2 hourly concentrations than CMAQ model. In the case of NO 2, CALPUFF and CMAQ models obtained similar results for hourly concentrations. However, for an average period of 24 hr for SO 2 and 1 hr for NO 2, the resulting concentrations with both models and even using same model with different grid resolution were different. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 104th AWMA Annual Conference and Exhibition 2011 (Orlando, FL 6/21-24/2011).
