abstract
The relationship between air void distribution and permeability in hot mix asphalt (HMA) specimens was studied. The permeability of HMA specimens were measured with different aggregate source, aggregate gradation, percent air voids, asphalt content and thickness. X-ray computed tomography and image analysis techniques were used to quantify the three-dimensional air void distribution and connectivity. An equation was developed for predicting the HMA permeability as a function of air voids and aggregate gradation.
