abstract
An experiment aimed at capturing and characterizing damage evolution in hot mix asphalt (HMA) at relatively high temperatures was studied. X-ray computed tomography (CT) was used to capture the microstructure of the HMA specimens before and after loading. Image analysis techniques were developed to distinguish between air void growth and crack evolution. The results show that damage is a localized phenomenon occurring in a critical section due to the heterogeneity of the microstructure.
