abstract
Warm Mix Asphalts (WMA) have been used in pavement construction during the past two decades with good performance. Many studies focused on understanding the macroscopic properties of WMA, while only limited studies attempted to understand the influence of WMA additives on their microstructural properties and composition. This study aims to outline the effect of two WMA additives, Advera and Sasobit, on binder properties. The microstructural changes were investigated by means of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The AFM images highlighted the effect of the WMA additives, particularly Sasobit, on the phases of the binders. Moreover, the formation of phase discontinuities in the matrix indicates the different abilities of the phases to adjust stresses. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance was applied in order to rule out any chemical reactions between original binders and additives. Thermal analyses were applied to study the effect of the WMA additives on the thermal properties of the binders. 2014 Taylor & Francis Group.
