FATIGUE DESIGN CRITERIA FOR WELDED STEEL DETAILS. Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • A review of fatigue data and reassessment of the 1983 fatigue specification resistance functions has been conducted. Since the AASHTO specification fatigue resistance provisions were introduced in 1974, several major studies have been conducted around the world. By reviewing the results of these studies on large-scale welded steel test specimens, the original database has been broadened to include a wider range of detail type and sizes. A revised set of fatigue design curves were proposed and adopted by AASHTO in 1986 that better estimates the fatigue resistance of welded steel details. Though similar to the 1983 AASHTO curves, the new curves are more uniform and parallel; each curve is set at a constant slope of minus 3. 0. The AASHTO Connection Descriptions and Conditions have been revised and expanded to better represent the increased database.
