abstract
For a research project on the behavior of piles in sand for the United States Geological Survey and the Federal Highway Administration, ten sites were selected where detailed load tests had been performed on instrumented piles. The soil data at each site was collected and consisted mainly of in situ tests. The standard deviation, mean and coefficient of variation were calculated for each in situ test results. The results show that the coefficient of variation in the vertical direction is equal to approximately 1. 5 times the one in the horizontal direction.
