abstract
Mid-America Earthquake Center graduate students had a unique opportunity to participate in the Consequence-based Engineering (CBE) Institute held at Texas A&M University in 2003 and 2005. The CBE Institute is designed to offer an educational setting where students can participate in focused CBE instruction. The intent of the institute is to help MAE Center students become more effective researchers on their individual projects by understanding the "big picture" of CBE, the details of major research thrust areas, and other related topics. This educational program also provides a chance for participants to interact and build a network for future collaboration. This paper summarizes the program of the institute as it has evolved over two offerings and provides recommendations for similar educational experiences.
