Iron-based degradative solidification/stabilization (DS/S-Fe(II)) technology is an attractive treatment method that combines a chemical degradation process by Fe(II) with conventional solidification/stabilization. The effectiveness of DS/S-Fe(II) has already been proven for chlorinated organics including PCE, CT, and PCB. The applicability of DS/S-Fe(II) to 1,1,1-trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA) was studied. Degradation kinetics of 1,1,1-TCA by Fe(II) in 10% cement slurries was studied using batch slurry reactors. A saturation model observed at higher Fe(II) concentration and target organic concentration describes that reductive dechlorination of 1,1,1-TCA occurs on the surface of active solids. Reductive reaction pathway of 1,1,1-TCA was suggested through identification of transformation products of 1,1,1-TCA.
