abstract
An approach to induce instability in mixtures to determine parameters that are relevant to mixture rut resistance is proposed. The Superpave gyratory compactor with shear measurements and the option of changing the compaction angle during compaction was used. Mixtures were compacted to a density that is consistent with the air voids of field pavements immediately after construction. The results show that the proposed framework may have the potential for becoming an index test for evaluation the rutting potential of mixtures.
