abstract
This paper summarizes the results of an industry sponsored study on the design and analyses of suction anchors in soft clays. References on suction anchors (>200) were collected and a number of prediction methods and data related to installation performance and holding capacity were identified and summarized. The practices for predicting the installation performance and capacity of suction anchors were evaluated, including an assessment of their simplicity, completeness, sensitivity, practicality, and generality. Research topics with the potential for improving current practice were identified. The basis of the evaluation was a comparison of predictions of hypothetical cases of various simplified methods as well as a comparison of predictions using these methods with 'ground truth' data from either rigorous 3D finite element analyses or prototype data where available. 2005 Taylor & Francis Group.
