abstract
Atrazine, an agricultural herbicide, is frequently a contaminant of drinking water, but can be removed by adsorption onto granulated activated carbon (GAC). Biological activity in GAC columns may enhance treatment due to contaminant removal by both biodegradation and adsorption. Results presented here show metabolism of isopropyl 14C-labeled atrazine in biological GAC columns produced more 14CO2 than ring-labeled atrazine, indicating dealkylation of atrazine was more rapid than ring cleavage.
