abstract
Chemical and microbiological characteristics were determined for heavy metal contaminated, rhizosphere soil from a southeast Kansas mining site. Water soluble heavy metal concentrations were not correlated to any soil chemical or microbiological properties. However, plant available Zn and Cd were strongly dependent on soil pH. Bacterial heavy metal resistance in the rhizosphere increased as the level of plant available heavy metal increased.
