High-temperature Raman spectra of 9,10-dihydroanthracene vapor and melt Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • The vapor phase Raman spectrum of 9,10-dihydroanthracene was recorded at 280C. The low-frequency region shows three bands at 223, 171 and 119 cm-1, and these were assigned as the in-phase ring flapping (29), in-phase ring twisting (36) and 36-49, a difference band between 36 and ring puckering (49), respectively. The difference band demonstrates that the molecule is puckered with C(2v) symmetry. The Raman spectra of the melt (at 140C) and solid were also recorded and compared with that of the vapor. Assignments were made and compared with predictions from molecular mechanics calculations.
