VACUUM SYSTEM CONTROL FOR THE HEAVY ION TRANSPORT LINE. Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • The Brookhaven AGS (Alternating Gradient Synchrotron) and the Tandem Van de Graaff are now joined together by a 600-m-long transport line that allows heavy ions from the Tandem, up to fully stripped sulfur (M equals 32), to be transported into the AGS and accelerated to 15 GeV/A. With the addition of a booster between the Tandem and the AGS in the near future, heavy ions such as gold (M equals 200) can be accelerated to 30 Z/A GeV/A. The HITL (Heavy Ion Transport Line) vacuum control system design and implementation are described. The ion pump power supply, local valve control chassis, vacuum controller, nonevaporable getter strip control, computer, vacuum system control logic, and system bakeout.
