MODAL COST ANALYSIS IN MODEL AND CONTROLLER REDUCTIONS. Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Many model reduction schemes can be interpreted as performing the following sequence of tasks: (1) selecting a set of coordinates or subsystem components which are subject to truncation, and (2) selecting a truncation criterion. A Model Error Index (MEI) can be used to evaluate reduced models when compared to a more complete evaluation model. The MEI is based upon a quadratic measure of the difference in outputs of the two models. The quadratic cost for the evaluation model may be decomposed into separate terms involving each subsystem (component contribution). These component costs are used as a truncation criterion (2), and the main objective of the paper is to provide and analyze explicit component cost formulas for various definitions of components.
