abstract

  • A vacuum system consisting of a 40 m long 8. 8-cm-diam stainless steel tube, pumped by seven pumping stations, has been assembled using automatic welding methods. All components have been fired at 950 degree C in a vacuum furnace at a pressure less than 1 multiplied by 10** minus **4 Torr. Each pumping station contains a Ti-sublimator, a 20 l/s ion pump and a UHV gage. After assembly, the entire system was baked out at 250 degree C for 24 h. A pressure less than 1 multiplied by 10** minus **1**1 Torr was reached after titanium flash. A discussion is presented of (a) surface treatment of stainless for 10** minus **1**1 Torr operation, (b) bake out and conditioning cycle to read 1 multiplied by 10** minus **1**1 Torr, and (c) leak checking at low pressures.
