abstract
The synthesis of processes of areal rainfall is treated by proposing an extension to a previous model of point rainfall synthesis. The proposed model generates sample functions of a random process of areal rainfall that preserves its areal covariance structure but uses as input not the areal covariance itself but the point covariance of the corresponding point rainfall process. A numerical application of the model is presented, and the practical implications of preserving areal covariance rather than point covariance when rainfall models are used in conjunction with distributed rainfallrunoff models are discussed.
