Recent wave kinematics experimental studies Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • Kinematics in the near surface region of water waves have been measured with a laser Doppler anemometer in the laboratory. The major results of these recent wave kinematics measurements are discussed. Regular, irregular and dual component wave trains were generated, and their kinematics measured from well below the still water level to very near the water surface. Horizontal velocity measurements in the wave crests typically exceed predictions using Wheeler stretching techniques for dual component and irregular waves. A new numerical technique which accounts for wave-wave interaction shows excellent agreement with experimental measurements under dual component waves and offers promise for application to irregular seas.
