Transit draft roll motion stability analysis of the Mobile Offshore Base (MOB) using time varying coefficients Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • The issue of roll motion under parametric excitation is of critical importance in the stability analysis of the Mobile Offshore Base (MOB) when operating at transit draft. This is primarily due to the hull geometry of the vessel, which exhibits a substantial change in the water plane area at the pontoon top. This sudden change in the water plane area combined with the phenomenon of water on the pontoon top leads to a classic case of parametric excitation due to a drastic reduction in righting arm. In this work the roll motion of the Mobile Offshore Base under pure parametric excitation has been studied using Mathieu's equation. Based on the results, the unstable points and the corresponding sea conditions have been identified.
