Challenges in Variable Resolution Simulations of Separated Flow Over Delta Wings Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015. Variable-resolution simulations of a 50 swept, sharp leading edge, delta wing are performed at low Reynolds number using the Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (URANS) and Partially Averaged Navier Stokes (PANS) turbulence models. The study focuses on the ability of the models to capture the vortex structure both forward and aft of vortex breakdown. A challenging aspect of the flow is that the pre-breakdown vortex is nearly laminar, and turbulent flow appears only after breakdown occurs near mid-chord. If the upstream resolution is adequate to resolve all laminar features, then both URANS and PANS reasonably capture the large scale features of the flow in the downstream region. It is found that inadequate resolution in the mostly laminar forward vortex leads to poor simulation of the aft vortex and aft flow features irrespective of the model fidelity.
