Aerosol generation approach and aerosol combustion behavior study Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • The hazard of high flash point liquid is often overlooked by people because the flammable hazard of liquid is conventionally classified by their flash point. However, numerous incidents revealed that high flash point liquid can be ignited and can explode when it is in the form of aerosol. The aerosol usually forms in the situations where the liquid is released under elevated pressure and temperature, or rapid condensation of vapor. Although a flammable aerosol is composed of liquid droplets, the aerosol behaves very differently from the bulk liquid. The small droplets diameter promotes mass and heat transfer because of larger surface area compared with bulk liquid. Moreover, the diffusion of droplets makes the aerosol easily ignited by ignition source. In this study, the combustion behavior of the aerosol with different droplet size generated by electrospray was investigated. Furthermore, the aerosol generation process was simulated by OpenFOAM. The Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) of droplets obtained from simulation is compared with experimental results.
