abstract
Hydrophobe-modified hydroxyethyl celluloses (HMHECs) are prepared with an emphasis on distancing the hydrophobe from the segmentally rigid anhydroglucose repeating units of cellulose. This in concept would serve two purposes, it could facilitate thickening by nonionic surfactants, the primary surfactant in an architectural latex coating, and it could modify the shear thinning behavior of hydroxyethyl cellulose thickened coatings containing small particle latices, arising from depletion flocculation phenomenon.
