Electroencephalograms of normal anesthetized cats. Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Amplitude, frequency, and pattern characteristics of the electroencephalogram (EEG) of normal cats were determined. In parallel with what was done in an earlier study on normal dogs, restraint for EEG recording was accomplished with a light stage of anesthesia (equal volumes thiopental pentobarbital, diluted with water), and 3 subdermal electrode montages were used (reference, intrahemispheric bipolar, and transhemispheric bipolar). Results were generally similar to those reported for dogs. Amplitudes varied over a 2 to 2 1/2 fold range, but frequencies were very consistent within leads from a given cat and among all cats, with the great bulk of the large, conspicuous waves having a duration of 4 to 20/sec. These data are considered a reliable frame of reference for use in the clinical diagnosis and prognosis of feline encephalopathies.
