abstract
The advantages and disadvantages of estrogen use are of great concern to the medical community and to this country's 31 million postmenopausal women. Estrogen administration not only relieves hot flashes and atrophic vaginitis but also may prevent or arrest oestoporosis, a process of bone loss associated with an increased risk of fractures. However, use of estrogens also may increase the likelihood of developing endometrial cancer, and its effects on the risks of breast cancer and cardiovascular disease remain largely unknown. The National Institute on Aging is conducting a Consensus Development Conference to evaluate and compare these benefits and risks in order to derive principles for postmenopausal estrogen use.
