Pros and cons of estrogen-replacement therapy. Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • To the Editor: Congratulations on the informative and timely review of estrogen-replacement therapy that appeared in the September 20 issue of the Journal. On September 13 and 14, 1979, the National Institute on Aging, National Institutes of Health, held a conference on estrogen use and postmenopausal women, at which similar conclusions were reached. Two differences in our recommendations seem worthy of mention. First of all, our panelists concluded that routine addition of progestins for several days per cycle should not be recommended at present, since the possible risks associated with these substances have not been adequately evaluated in this age. 1980, Massachusetts Medical Society.
