abstract
This chapter presents error-control systems that rely on forward error correction (FEC) only. It presents FEC-based transmission systems for embedded media bit streams. It emphasizes two optimization approaches for these systems. The first one maximizes the expected number of correctly decoded information bits. This approach has two desirable features: the optimization is independent of the source and it can be done very quickly. The second approach minimizes the expected distortion. While its optimization is more complex than that of the first approach, it can provide a significantly better rate-distortion performance in many situations. FEC can be combined with other error-resilient techniques for robust media transmission. The choice of an appropriate error control method is not easy, because it requires a deep understanding of both the source and the channel. 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
