Influence of catenary shape of power line conductors on ambient magnetic fields Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • Traditional extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic field computation techniques assume that the conductors of power lines are straight horizontal wires. This assumption sometimes introduces significant distortions into the model. An exact solution and different approximations are proposed for modeling of magnetic fields produced by the sagged conductors of power lines. The proposed approaches differ in the required computational burden and precision of the results and must be used depending on a particular situation. An example of field mapping measurements illustrates the applicability and the need for this approach. The relative importance of the catenary shape effects is discussed.
