METHOD TO IMPROVE TRANSMISSION-SYSTEM VOLTAGE STABILITY Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • The purpose of this design project is to investigate the impact of triac controlled series capacitors (TCSC) on transmission system operation, and specifically upon transmission system voltage stability. Increased electrical loads and higher inter-utility power transfer, coupled with fewer additions to the transmission system have resulted in increased potential for voltage instability. However, advances in power electronics and in system state estimation offer the potential to increase system stability margins without having to build new transmission lines. In this design project, we will test a method for improving power system voltage stability through the use of a TCSC. The project includes a low voltage (120V) model of a transmission system and a prototype controller.
