abstract
In this paper, codes with even minimum distance (extended Hamming codes and parity check codes) are utilized for error protection of DCT coded pictures. These codes are decoded in a manner to take advantage of the natural redundancy in a picture. It is shown that these codes can provide error concealment, with lower overhead than what is reported in the past [4]. A method for joint source/channel coding of DCT coded images is also introduced. The SNR graphs and the subjective examination of the images demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique. Improvements of up to 8 dB were observed compared to the uncoded system.
