abstract
An optical architecture based on all-pass filter decomposition which can realize elliptic filters as well as other designs is described. The architecture is compact and requires fewer couplers and relative phase shifts per stage compared to other general architectures. The layout is demonstrated using planar waveguide ring resonators. Control over the filter response, such as passband width and stopband rejection, is achieved by changing the nominal coupling ratios and phases. Scaling to include more rings in the optical architecture provides for the realization of higher order filters.
