All-pass filter dispersion compensator using planar waveguide ring resonators Academic Article uri icon

abstract

  • A multistage all-pass filter for dispersion compensation is presented. The filter has <1.6 dB average loss, large dispersion, small group delay ripple, compensates multiple channels, and provides positive or negative dispersion by tuning the relative phases of the rings. Unlike dispersion compensating fibers, the filter introduces no nonlinear impairments. The passband width can be increased by increasing the free spectral range or increasing the number of stages. The filter is compact compared to chirped fiber Bragg gratings where the length scales proportionally to the number of compensated channels. Increasing the number of stages and integrating the device with other functions is easy using the planar waveguide implementation.
