abstract
A new architecture which can be used as a reconfigurable router for exchanging channels between two fibers or as reconfigurable add/drop multiplexing filters is presented. Hitless switching for a 10 Gb/s signal using a two channel device implemented in planar waveguides with UV-induced gratings is demonstrated. For operating on a subset of the system channels, the device offers significantly smaller loss with flat passboards compared to an add/drop using a waveguide grating router (WGR) pair, where losses can easily exceed 15 dB if passband flattened WGRs are used.
