abstract
Although Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) systems are finally entering the marketplace, it will be several years until such systems are universally available. In the meantime, it will continue to be necessary to interconnect proprietary networks to OSI and TCP/IP systems. In this paper, we review the OSI model, its relationship to other network models, and the various layers where gateway functions are applicable.
