abstract
The growth and development of power system wide area protection is discussed. The introduction of the Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) has greatly improved the observability of the power system dynamics. Based on PMUs, different kinds of wide area protection, emergency control, and optimization systems can be designed. It is expected that tailor-made wide area protection systems against large disturbances, designed to improve power system reliability or to increase the transmission capacity, will be commonly used in the future.
