Continuum mechanics approach to loose-bed motion Conference Paper uri icon

abstract

  • A mathematical model is presented for simulation of loose-bed motion. The physical system is separated into two regions, a bottom region and an upper region. The bottom region is representative of bed load while the upper region contains sediment in suspension. The two regions interact through erosion and deposition processes. For simulation of the bed load, a continuity relation is applied, and suspended sediment is treated by the advection-dispersion equation. Stress and strain within the bottom layer is described by proper constitutive laws, and the model is solved for steady state conditions. Comparison with other theories and experimental evidence support the validity of this approach.
